Union Depot Lofts
St. Paul, Minnesota
This development is in the Union Depot in downtown St. Paul, Minnesota. The historic structure was built as a train depot in 1923 and has served as a business and storage building since train service was moved to a different location in the 1960s.
The Union Depot Lofts occupy the perimeter of the Depot building, leaving the voluminous center concourse area open for future development, including a new multi-modal transportation facility. Each dwelling unit has a 20' high space in which a mezzanine floor has been inserted. The resulting space is open, yet affords privacy at the upper level. Most units have large skylights that bring light down to the main level.
The modern finishes, such as stainless steel, stained Europly cabinetry and terrazzo floor tile are juxtaposed with the concrete and clay tile elements of the original structure to create a unique space that respects the history of the building while infusing an element of high style.
