Orchestra Hall Renovation Concept Design
In the Fall of 2007, James Dayton Design was contracted by the Minnesota Orchestra to create a design concept for the eventual renovation of its existing Hall on Nicollet Mall. The goal was to explore the potential of the project, and create a series of images that would excite and intrigue the potential donor base, energizing the fundraising process.
JDD Ltd. approached the concept design studies by addressing three considerations; program analysis, precedent research and context study. Our methodology was to study these three influences as interdependent considerations in order to arrive at a fundamental understanding of the Orchestra’s goals.
The concept design study yielded three potential options for an approach to the design of Orchestra Hall, all of which had the following common characteristics; strong contextual relationships, honest dynamic spaces generated directly from the program, thorough site analysis and extensive program research and precedent studies. The designs were represented by a considerable number of physical interior and exterior models at various scales, graphics and illustrations and, ultimately, a book of the schemes ready for publication and use in a capital campaign.
