James Dayton Design redefined living in the warehouse district of Minneapolis with this residential building. Situated adjacent to the historic Bookmen Lofts building, the Bookmen Stacks is a 9-story, 45-unit building which completes the three-quarter block residential campus designed by JDD. The Stacks building sits atop an underground parking garage having a green roof courtyard which recycles rainwater from the buildings and site and provides much needed green space to the neighborhood.
The building design, while referential of the industrial character of the neighborhood in its massing, stands in stark contrast to its brick-clad neighbors by employing an innovative precast concrete truss system allowing alternate floors to remain column-free and through the combination of glass curtainwall and zinc panel cladding. The large concrete truss structure is visible from the outside through high-efficiency glazing, with zinc panels cladding the facades of the building where necessary to respect the privacy of the occupants and those of neighboring buildings.
